The Embedded System Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development and testing of electronic systems, such as single board computers, from the initial architecture definition through PCB assembly with components to production. This candidate would be hands-on capable of designing electronics for computing applications, supporting firmware, system-level analysis and design for test & manufacturability (DFT & DFM.) This person will collaborate with cross functional teams for software and hardware integration.
Job Description:
The individual will work as part of a collaborative design-team using prudent design-management techniques including EDA tools, version-control and technical documentation, while participating in project-planning and progress-tracking. Additional duties include evaluation of design requirements, determining design methodologies, helping formulate basis of estimates of effort/cost for potential new business, and participation in continuous improvements to internal design methodologies.
- Assist the Space Computing (SC) development teams consisting of hardware, software, firmware, mechanical and testing.
- Support manufacturing builds of prototypes and flight units.
- Assist test engineering in production test problem troubleshooting and resolution.
- Optimize systems for design objectives (performance, power, radiation) including design for manufacturability.
- Implement and simulate new SC designs, including schematic design and functional simulation.
- Complete sign-off system-level analysis: electrical, timing, thermal and mechanical.
- Provide technical guidance and leadership for outside services.
- Maintain and perform benchmarks for SC products.
Additional duties
- Provide structured feedback to the Business Unit (BU) helping define product roadmaps and strategies for product derivatives and future standard processing integrated circuit offerings.
- Stay current with EDA tools, modern design techniques, technology, architectures, and interfaces.
- Partner with internal and external customers to develop technical solutions that enable new missions.
- Support regular technical/status meetings and help prepare and coordinate milestone design-reviews, both Internal and customer-facing.
Job Requirements:
Minimum
- BSEE or BSCE, in lieu of degree 15-17 years of related experience can be considered.
- Experience in hardware and software product development (analysis, design, development, test, and sustainment)
- 12+ years experience in high-performance hardware architecture, development, and analysis
- Familiarity with various microarchitectures (SPARC V8, RISK-V, ARM)
- Familiarity with PCB design, signal integrity and power integrity analysis at the PCB level
- Debugging, assembly and testing of integrated circuits and their components
- Practical design of DC/DC regulators, analog sensors and conditioning circuits for real-time processing, common EIA/TIA/JEDEC signaling standards, and physical design/analysis of PCB traces for high-speed and differential signal-integrity
- Working knowledge or familiarity with real-time embedded system programming and debug
Computer skills:
- Exposure to, and aptitude to learn Unix platforms, command-shells & utilities, Tcl scripting, and modern EDA Tools such as Altium Designer, HyperLynx, SPICE, LabView
- C/C++, Python, Version-Control systems & methods
